Doki Doki Literature Club

Review

Hi, Monika Muddy here. Have you ever heard of Doki Doki Literature Club? Yes? No? Well, at least now, you just did! And it’s such an awesome game!

DDLC plays like a regular visual novel, with a bit of dating sim gameplay. You're a male student with a childhood friend, Sayori. She wants to know what club you'll join this year. What a surprise... You don’t have any ideas, and you didn’t plan anything. On your friend's advice, you decide to try the Literature Club.

Writing poem mini-game

Made by Monika, she has already recruited four girls, including herself as president, and Sayori as vice president. She needs one more member to be considered an official club. It's your lucky day, because you're going to be the one! It's not like you had any better ideas anyway...

So, welcome to the Doki Doki Literature Club! Each day, your task will be to write a poem for the club and share it with the other members. It will be the opportunity to create affinity and know each other better. The poem creations appear as a mini-game. You have to pick multiple words that will influence how others perceive you.

The game might be a bit slow for the first half, but it gets way more interesting in the second. The story is really well written. A lot of surprises await the player, as well as in the gameplay. I'm not going to say more or I'd risk saying too much. The less you know, the better your experience will be. And what a wonderful one! The game itself is rather short and can be done in six to eight hours. As it’s a VN, there is not much difficulty. There is extra content to find for those willing to seek it.

The graphics are decent enough. They are what to expect from the genre. The girls are cute and well drawn. Special mention to the poems though. Not only are they well written, but each girl has her own handwriting style! The soundtrack is nice overall. There are a few songs that are less memorable, but they all fit very well, are comfy enough (most of the time), and contribute to the ambience of the game.

The game is totally free-to-play, and you can get eitherthe DRM-free version or the Steam one. If you really enjoy the adventure, I'd advise buying the Plus! version. It has extra content, more paths to enjoy, more soundtracks, and has full HD artwork. It's a way to appreciate even more of the good work of Team Salvato!

In the end, all I want to say is that Doki Doki is oki-doki!
